Leading London Business School faculty have been appointed Fellows of the British Academy.

Alex Edmans, Professor of Finance, and Elias Papaioannou, Professor of Economics, are among 86 scholars to be elected to the UK’s national academy for the social sciences and humanities in 2024.

Professor Edmans is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the Future of Responsible Investing and an expert in corporate finance, responsible business and behavioural finance. He is a Director of the American Finance Association, Vice President of the Western Finance Association, Fellow, Director, and Chair of the Ethics Committee of the Financial Management Association, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. His latest book is May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases – And What We Can Do About It.

Professor Papaioannou is the academic director of the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at LBS and an award-winning economist focusing on international finance, political economy, economic history, applied econometrics, growth, and development.

Each year, the British Academy awards Fellowships to outstanding thinkers and leaders from across the humanities and social sciences.

British Academy President Julia Black said: “We are delighted to welcome this year’s cohort of Fellows, and I offer my warmest congratulations to each and every one.

“Since the Academy was created in 1902, our Fellows have been the lifeblood of the organisation, representing the very best of our disciplines – and we would not have the impact we have without their expertise, time and energy. I very much look forward to working closely with our new Fellows; the breadth and depth of their expertise adds so much to the Academy.”
