Experiential Learning

Applying classroom learning to real-world challenges

 

We challenge our students to apply their learning through transformational experiences and to have responsible, real-world impact. We seek to nurture a generation of leaders who are lifelong learners with a global view. Through our experiential learning projects, students will have the opportunity to apply their skills and experience in order to affect positive social and economic changes in local communities worldwide.

Graduate Masters, MBA, Sloan and Leadership programmes travel to destinations such as Boston & New York, San Francisco and Zurich.

Each Global Experience is led by expert faculty and explores a topical theme, offering an in-depth view of a country's business culture. Students will have the opportunity to interact meaningfully with members of the local business ecosystem, faculty, alumni, fellow peers and others in the LBS global community.

At LBS we recognise the importance of our role in helping business drive global impact, many of our programmes and initiatives are designed to help us deliver against this aim.

At London Business School we are proud of the work and relationships our people bring to global business and government acting in the capacity as advisors and leading experts in their fields.

  • Tom Gosling London Business School Executive Fellow of Finance sits on the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) ESG Advisory Committee.
  • Alex Edmans Professor of Finance sits on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Future Council on the Future of Responsible Investing.
  • Lucrezia Reichlin is a Professor of Economics at the London Business School, an external fellow at the Brussels based think-tank Bruegel, and Chair of the group of the National Schools of Economics and Statistics (GENES) in Paris. She was a trustee of the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) Foundation and she has led the work of the Foundation for the establishment of the International Sustainability Standards Board.
  • Hélène Rey is a member of the Group of Thirty, of the Bellagio Group on the international economy and a member of the external advisory group to the managing director of the IMF. She is a member of the Haut Conseil de Stabilité Financière (French Macro Prudential Authority).

Our students are given real-life practical opportunities to apply their learning and skills through our global experiential programmes, which in turn provide responsible, real-world impact. These transformational programmes allow students to affect positive social and economic changes in local communities worldwide.

Wheeler Institute climate initiative

As a key pillar of its work, the Wheeler Institute endeavours to highlight and create opportunities that allow our MBA students to be part of understanding, identifying and promoting solutions to significant challenges in social and economic development. The Development Impact Platform is an opportunity for current MBA students to create long-lasting impact for a community through a unique collaboration. Students work in project teams with students from our local partner academic institution.

The Incubator programme, supported by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Private Capital (IEPC) at London Business School, is an initiative exclusively designed for our alumni start-up founders, representing our commitment to nurturing entrepreneurial talent and propelling start-ups to new heights within our global alumni community.

Community

Our London campus is situated within a community as richly diverse and vibrant as our own, but one with pockets of high social need. Engaging with our community on and off campus is a key focus area for us to build local impact.

  • The LBS Community Engagement Programme has seen significant growth since it was founded in 2009.
  • It covers the wide variety of volunteering activities that our staff, students and faculty undertake aimed at improving the lives of people in our London community, working in partnership with local organisations, schools and charities.
  • The programme is delivered by the staff-led Community Action Group (CAG) and the Student Volunteers Club (SVC) with additional support from the Impact Consulting Club (through which students provide pro-bono consulting to non-profit organisations) and our Experiential Learning programme.
