Dr Yueh joins UK Soft Power Council

Newly launched council to drive UK’s soft power global strategy

Dr Linda Yueh CBE has joined the newly launched UK Soft Power Council.

The UK Soft Power Council aims to reflect the breadth and depth of the UK’s world-class culture, artistic creativity, sports, education, and leadership in science and technology.

By bringing all these elements together, while seeking out the leadership and support from world-class experts, underpinned by the UK’s internationally valued and important institutions, the UK Soft Power Council aims to define and showcase the role soft power plays as a vital component to the country’s security and prosperity.

The Soft Power Council is co-chaired by the Foreign Secretary and Culture Secretary. Members include some of the world’s leading thinkers and advocates across both international policy and the soft power sectors.

The Council will help drive the UK’s soft power strategy, bringing momentum to campaigns, while helping to broaden the reach of the biggest soft power and foreign policy moments in the global calendar.

The UK Soft Power Council is an important part of the UK Government's objective to “promote a new UK image and offering in the world”.

When it comes to soft power, the UK enjoys a strong position relative to other countries – a British Council survey on the views of young people found that it is the most attractive country in the G20 group of nations.

Dr Yueh is an Adjunct Professor of Economics at London Business School and the Executive Chair of the Royal Commonwealth Society. A globally recognised author, Dr Yueh is a Non-Executive Director of several publicly listed FTSE 100 companies on the London Stock Exchange, including Rentokil Initial plc, SEGRO plc, and Standard Chartered plc, where she is Chair of the Culture and Sustainability Committee. She is a Fellow (FRSA) of the Royal Society of Arts.

Speaking about joining the UK Soft Power Council, Dr Yueh said:

“The UK’s pre-eminence in arts and entertainment, its foremost achievements in science and technology, its success in the realm of sporting competition, and of course its world-leading academic institutions, places the UK as a front-rank soft power nation. I am honoured to join the Soft Power Council to enhance policy in this area that can help improve British prosperity.”
